About Chanticleer

What's in a name?

The name Chanticleer comes from the singing cockerel in Chaucer's Canterbury Tales.

Having begun singing under the mantle of the Malton Singers, in 1975 our choir adopted the name The Chanticleer Singers.

Our current Director, Jane Sturmheit, joined us in 1977 when we were performing concerts locally, in nearby villages, and beginning to build our reputation for good music and a wide ranging repertoire.

Around the world in thirty years

The Chanticleer singers are now very well-travelled, having sung 284 concerts in 110 different venues - in the UK and abroad.

Some of the grandest venues in the UK include Ely and Liverpool Cathedrals, York Minster, Inverary Castle, Oxford and the Archbishop's Palace in York.

Past travels have included Cork, and an international choir festival in Pornic, France, and most recently a concert in Herefordshire. We have made numerous radio and television performances and have several recordings available on CD. Our 'Heart and Soul' CD features the lighter side of the choir's repertoire: Folk songs, spirituals and popular music from the 1930's onward.

The numbers add up.

There are currently thirty-one singers in the choir, performing four or five converts annually in the local area. Always popular are the two Christmas concerts - two performances being necessary to accommodate all those who wish to attend. The choir also responds, when possible to requests to sing for other organisations, and occasionally sings for weddings.

Open rehearsals

We usually hold an open rehearsal once a year when anyone can enjoy an evening singing with the choir. Ask any choir member for details.

On Mass days, which in church begins to play"
